Interantivity In Multimedia Application


Introduction

In the age of technology, computer is familiar to human being as a technology product unlike past time, that computer is used only in a company, scientist, programmer and other professions. In the past time, computer was only used by people to do or complete their job with using the application software installed in their computer, and the application software that can be used in computer was very limited. But in nowadays, the modern age, there are many computer application software were developed by programmer for different profession and also for entertainment. The application software are classified to many categories, one of them is multimedia application. The impressions of people about multimedia are picture, image, video, animation, game and so on. These are only a minor part of multimedia and some of them are not the product of multimedia, but they need the help of multimedia to complete them, e.g. game. Thus, the importance of multimedia are unquestionably especially in the area of computing. It also plays a key role in variety profession such as business, tourism industry, advertising and so on.

Multimedia

Multimedia is the integration of multiple forms of media that includes text, graphics, audio, video and others. Users can choose from a range of media elements to convey massage that the users wanted to.

“Multimedia can be defined as an integration of multiple media elements (audio, video, graphics, text, animation, etc.) into one synergetic and symbiotic whole that results in more benefits for the end user than any one of the media elements can provide individually” (Reddi, 2003). It means that with the use of combination of the elements of media, it may bring an interesting, attractive and easier understanding to the massage that user may want to express compare to use only one element of media.

Multimedia Application

An application, or application program, is a software program that runs on computer and each program has a specific application for the user (techterms.com). Multimedia application is one of them. Multimedia application came with the capabilities to capture, digitize, compress, store, decompress and present information. The aim of multimedia application is to provide a creative and effective way of producing, storing and communicating informations(hubpages.com).

Nowadays, there are many multimedia application provided for entertainment, education, corporate presentation and much more. The application for entertainment which have Window Media Player, Cyberlink PowerDVD, Media Player Classic and much more. There are also have application for editing photos which are the famous Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and much more. There are many applications for multimedia from free of charge until paid for license and some are expensive.

Interactivity In Multimedia Application

Interactivity bring means two-ways between human being and other party(human being or computer software or others). People interact with other people by communicating through language, movement, facial expression and so on. This interaction could be set up is because people can understand the expression that the other people would like to express through communicating with language. But, the way of interactivity between human being and computer is different from people interact with people.

According to Rada Roy(1995), the “Human Computer Interaction model might consists of 4  main component which is HUMAN, COMPUTER, TASK ENVIRONMENT and MACHINE ENVIRONMENT. The communication between people and computers : one must understand something about both and about the tasks which people perform with computers. A general model of human, computer interface emphasizes the flow of information and control at the human computer interface.” The interactivity between people and computer refers to software which accepts and responds to input from humans.

There are three stages involve in interactivity which are Input, Process and Output. User use input device to give instruction and data to the application software, then the application process the command that the user had inputted. After process, the application display the output through the output device according to the command that user had inputted.

There are many type of input devices for user input the instruction to the computer and process with the application software.

There are also many types of output devices for displaying the information, output and other data that user had inputted.

Nowadays, most of the multimedia applications are interactive program. Interactive program bring means a program which need interaction or input from the user in order to operate or process the command and display the output or result to the user. Some famous examples of the multimedia application which are interactive program are Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Flash and other multimedia application.

Most of the people use multimedia application such like Adobe Photoshop, main use of them is editing photo. If an original picture is not attractive, not suitable for posting, not nice to look and other reasons, people would like to edit it to become attractive, beautiful and perfect for posting. The famous multimedia application which people use often is Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop has been around for over twenty years, it’s certainly become more powerful. With using Photoshop, there are interactivity between user and application.

First of all, user will use mouse to point and click to operate the application, Adobe Photoshop. The application will operating, process and run the Photoshop. After the application open, there is an interface shown up and the application is ready for user to edit the picture. User click at the menu bar to open the document which is the picture user wanted to edit. Most of the user will use the Crop Toll to crop the picture which part he or she is needed by clicking the crop tool at the tool bar. User click and drag inside the image to draw the area to crop the part of the image he wishes to keep with using the mouse. The area of the part of image wish to keep will be cut.

Most of the people also used to be adding text to the picture they want. With using the Text Tool, text will enabled to add on to the picture. User can input any words he would like to add and add on the text to any part of the picture. The size of the text can be added in with large size or small size which is depending to user’s wish. The colors, font styles, wraps and other patterns of the text can be also input according to the user’s preferences. User selects the tool with using the mouse and type in the text with using the keyboard. After the processing of the command user had input, the Photoshop will display the result picture.

Reflection and Conclusion

After the research, we have learnt the interactivity between multimedia application and user. User use the input device giving command to the application and the application will processing and give output as result to the user. The quality of the output is depended to the user’s proficiency. Proficient user may input expertise instruction, data, or command to the application, the application may processing with the accurate data and the output or result display to the user will become more accurate and high quality.

The result outcome from a proficient user and a basic skill user are different in quality and the perfection of the output. A basic skill user may not holding the efficient skills will unable to make a high quality output because of the less interactivity between the user and the application. With less interactivity with the application, the user may unable to outcome the result which he expected to get.

In conclusion, learning, knowledge and skill are necessary for the user of multimedia application. The quality of the result may depend on how skillful and how proficient the user. Interactivity between user and the multimedia application is necessary also for the user. It brings many benefits to learning and knowledge to an user for future study and work.
